Welcome to another episode of Rock Bottom Wellness. I’m your host, Tiffany Flaten. Today, I’m on my own discussing 3 Ways to Support Your Thyroid and while doing so how you can boost your immune system. 

Most people think of the connection between your immune system and your thyroid gland in context of a condition called Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. This is an autoimmune condition of the thyroid gland and accounts for at least 90% of all cases of hypothyroidism. Oftentimes, it is treated as if it were no different than “run of the mill” hypothyroidism. Unfortunately, it IS different and there are ways to address it even outside of the context of medication.  I’m going to discuss 3 Ways here today. 

  1. Eat nutrient dense foods. Add a wide variety of produce to your diet to ensure you’re getting the antioxidants needed to keep you healthy. Eat foods rich in zinc, copper, magnesium which you find in good quality animal proteins, nuts and seeds, as well as fatty fish and seafood. 
  2. Blood Sugar Balance. Eat a balance of whole foods in the form of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. This is easily done by eating fresh, whole foods most of the time which sets your body up to be able to fight off infection more easily. Imbalanced blood sugar causes stress to the body AND causes blood sugar and insulin to rise which causes our cells to become unhealthy and fat to be more easily stored...which keeps the vicious cycle going. 
  3. Stress Management. It is well known that the thyroid and stress don’t play well. Stress exacerbates the dysfunction we may already have with our thyroid gland and causes us to require more and more healthy nutrients to power through our days. Eventually, we become depleted and get sick. Do this by starting and maintaining a mindfulness/meditation practice and really get serious about self care. Revisit episode 10 where I interview a practitioner who uses EFT with her clients to deal with emotional eating among other things. Sleep!! For real, figure out your sleep.
